Giffords' Rehab Shown in New Music Video

A new music video is showing images of then-Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in the earliest days of her recovery following injuries from a 2011 shooting.

The Arizona Republic reports that Giffords is shown working with a physical therapist in the video version of the song "Overcomer," by gospel performer Mandisa. The video also shows Giffords taking tentative steps in a hospital room and sitting up in a bed wearing protective headgear.

Those video images had not been previously released.

The video also features former Olympic skater Scott Hamilton, who was treated for testicular cancer and a benign brain tumor, and Robin Roberts, co-host of "Good Morning America." Last year, Roberts underwent a bone-marrow transplant.

The video premiered on "Good Morning America."

Giffords said in a statement she was inspired by the song because its message is "one of hope, perseverance and faith."

“We can’t always control what happens to us in life, but we can control how we respond,” she said in the statement. “Like the song says, if we keep positive and ‘stay in the fight till the final round,’ we can overcome more than we ever dreamed possible.”
