First Responder Proposes at Rays Game to Woman He Helped Save

A story of survival and love played out in front of thousands of Tampa Bay Rays fans Monday, as a first responder proposed to the domestic violence survivor whose life he helped save.

As NBC affiliate WFLA reports, Melissa Dohme was scheduled to throw the ceremonial first pitch Monday night on behalf of Hands Across the Bay, a Tampa-based organization organization that offers assistance to families in crisis.

Dohme survived a vicious attack by an ex-boyfriend in 2012. He stabbed her 32 times in the face, back, arms, hands and shoulders.

Cameron Hill, a firefighter, was one of the first responders who assisted Dohme as she was hospitalized in critical condition.

The two developed a bond, and they reconnected months after the attack. A romance eventually blossomed.

As Dohme took to the mound at Tropicana Field Monday, Hill stepped out to bring her a baseball. To her surprise, the ball had a special message written on it: The words "Will you marry me?" in red ink.

Hill dropped down on one knee and proposed. Dohme said yes, and they embraced and kissed in front of thousands of fans.
