Dad-to-Be Rescues Neighbor From Burning Home

All in a day's work: A northeastern Pennsylvania man saved a woman from her burning house, then raced his wife to the hospital when she went into labor.

Forty-four-year-old Marie Michalek tells The Times-Tribune of Scranton that she escaped her burning home overnight Friday by kicking out a second-floor window and stepping onto the roof with her dog under an arm. A man who recently moved to the neighborhood was waiting for them with a ladder, and they were able to make it down safely.

She says the neighbor introduced himself as Tom, then hurried away to drive his wife to the delivery room.

A state police fire marshal says the fire began in a shed between two homes, and he ruled it an arson. Both structures were heavily damaged. All five people in the homes got out safely.
