Biden Claims Endorsement From ‘Only’ Female Black Senator

Former Vice President Joe Biden said he was endorsed by the only African American woman to be elected to the Senate, before being called out by Sen. Kamala Harris: “That’s not true. The other one is here.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden incorrectly said that he has the support of the “only African American woman ever elected to the Senate" while talking about his support from black voters during the fifth Democratic presidential debate.

That drew a response from California Sen. Kamala Harris, who became the second black female senator when she was elected in 2016.

"The other one is here,” Harris responded, before breaking into laughter. Sen. Cory Booker, who is also black, said to Biden “that’s not true."

Biden quickly stated, “I said the first.”

Harris’ campaign tweeted moments later: “Proud to be the second Black woman elected to the U.S. Senate.”

Biden was touting support from former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun, the first black woman to be elected to the Senate in 1992.

In August, Biden came under fire for another gaffe on race, when he said "poor kids" are as bright as "white kids" during a conversation about discrimination faced by low-income students.

The Biden campaign did not immediately return a request for comment.
