Awards Season Round Up: ‘Slumdog,' Winslet Poised For Oscar Gold?

Following Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, the race of Oscar gold is tightening with “Slumdog Millionaire,” Kate Winslet and Sean Penn leading the pack. But could there be a few upsets on Hollywood’s biggest night?

“Slumdog Millionaire” continued its march towards Oscar glory this weekend. The Danny Boyle-directed film has won seven Best Picture awards including the Producers Guild Award on Saturday and Screen Actors Guild Award on Sunday.

Sean Penn won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role on Sunday at the SAG awards, besting Golden Globe winner Mickey Rourke. Penn has won six Best Actor awards, while Mickey has won four.

In the actress categories, Kate Winslet’s SAG win, along with her double Golden Globe win, puts her in reach of a golden statue on Oscar night. One problem, her role in “The Reader” earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination, while for every other awards show, she was nominated in a supporting category. Could Meryl Streep or Anne Hathaway, who have each taken home three awards, dim Kate’s Oscar heat?

With Kate missing from the Best Supporting Actress Oscar list, Penelope Cruz, who has taken home four Best Supporting Actress awards for “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” could leave the Kodak Theater clutching a little golden guy come Oscar night.

And the man behind “Slumdog Millionaire,” Danny Boyle, has already nabbed five directing honors for his Mumbai-set love story and could easily continue his winning streak at the 81st Annual Academy Awards, airing February 22 live 5PT/8ET on ABC.
