Suspects Fatally Hit Driver in Yonkers: Police

Several suspects in a stolen vehicle being followed by police in Yonkers struck another car Monday afternoon, killing the driver, police say.

Yonkers police said officers were called to Schroeder Street when a resident reported a suspicious van, with the occupants allegedly trying to break into a parking meter. A description of the van was broadcast to police patrol units, and a short time later, officers inside a marked patrol unit saw the van traveling in the area of North Broadway.

Police confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Yonkers, and the marked patrol unit began following the van to conduct a traffic stop northbound on Warburton Avenue, police said. Just before Odell Avenue, the van hit a sedan going southbound on Warburton.

The driver of the sedan, identified only as a woman who lived in Yonkers, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two people inside the van were seriously hurt and taken to local trauma centers, police said.

It's not clear if the suspects were aware they were being followed by police. Yonkers police said officers were merely following the suspects' van and that it was not a pursuit, although in emergency response transmissions, first responders can be heard characterizing it as such.

Police are continuing to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to contact Yonkers detectives at 914-377-7724.
