Yankees Slugger Luke Voit May Need Surgery for Sports Hernia

The Yankees placed slugger Luke Voit on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a sports hernia that may require surgery.

Voit was pulled from New York's 4-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night and went for an MRI, which revealed the injury. Manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday the team is still evaluating the severity.

The Yankees expect to determine in the next day or two whether Voit will require surgery, which would take him out of the lineup for about six weeks. If he doesn't need an operation, Boone said it will be a "day to day scenario."

"Sometimes you're able to treat this thing and it becomes a day to day thing," Boone said. "Sometimes surgery is the necessary way to go."

Voit is batting .278 with 19 home runs and an .885 OPS.

Boone said he felt comfortable with the team's depth if Voit does need surgery. Edwin Encarnación would likely get more reps at first base to fill in.

"Worst case, hopefully we'll have him back before the end of the season," Boone said.

Boone also opted to hold All-Star infielder DJ LeMahieu out of the lineup for a fourth straight game as he nurses a sore groin. Boone said LeMahieu was available to pinch hit and is expected to start when New York opens a four-game series against Boston on Friday night.

Voit's IL move came hours before the 4 p.m. EDT trade deadline. The Yankees have been shopping for pitching help but haven't swung any impactful moves. That's not a concern to Boone.

"Absolutely we have the people necessary to get this done," he said, adding, "We've obviously been tested a lot this season with our depth. At every turn, it's served us well."

Right-hander David Hale was also placed on the injured list with a lumbar spine strain, retroactive to Sunday. He became the 24th Yankees player on the IsL this year, four more than their disabled list total last season.

Infielder Breyvic Valera and right-hander Jonathan Holder were recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
