Young Woman Shot to Death in Bronx, 2nd in a Week: NYPD

A woman was shot in the back of the head and died in the Bronx early Sunday, police said.

Paramedics pronounced the woman, identified as 26-year-old Margarita Franco of the Bronx, dead in front of a building on 214th Street in the Williamsbridge section around 2:30 a.m., the NYPD said.

Neighbor Daniel Abreu woke up to the sound of gunfire. Then, he said, he heard something else.

"The shot wake me up then I heard laughing on this side," Abreu told NBC 4 New York.

Investigators put down evidence markers and knocked on doors to talk to potential witnesses.

Detectives also obtained surveillance video, which they say will help them in their investigation. The victim is seen walking down the street just moments before gunfire erupted.

"There was a detective that knocked on my door to find out if I heard anything," neighbor Carol Meade said. "I'm ready to move. It's scary."

It was the second shooting death of a young woman in the borough in less than a week.

On Monday, a young woman was gunned down in a Bronx apartment building when she went to protect a friend who was in some sort of trouble, friends and law enforcement sources said.

Aaliyah Alder, 21, was found dead with a single gunshot wound to her head on the eighth floor of the Forest Houses building on Tinton Avenue in Morrisania, police said.

There was no immediate suggestion that the two killings were related.
