A preliminary investigation indicates that the mother of three found unconscious outside her East Harlem apartment building over the weekend jumped from the roof in an apparent suicide, top city police officials said Monday.
Yanina Boitel, 33, was found Saturday night laying on the ground next to the Johnson Houses on Third Avenue with trauma to her body, police said. She was brought to Metropolitan Hospital where she died, police said.
Police initially said they considered her death to be "suspicious," but NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said Monday a witness not connected to Boitel gave information indicating she jumped of her own volition. The investigation remains active and ongoing, though, Boyce said.
Boitel's boyfriend was questioned after her body was found, but investigators say they do not believe he has any connection to her death.
Boitel leaves behind three children and recently became a grandmother.
