A teenager was charged in the sexual assault of a woman in her apartment building's stairwell, police said Sunday. 

The 16-year-old, whose name wasn't released because of his age, was charged with rape, sexually motivated assault and sexually motivated burglary, the NYPD said. 

The 40-year-old woman was followed into her building near 148th Street and Amsterdam Avenue around 6 a.m. on Saturday and grabbed her from behind as she walked up the stairs, police said.

The attacker tried to sexually assault the woman, but she fought him off. At some point during the attack, both the woman and the man fell down the stairs, according to police.

The attacker fled and the woman was taken to Harlem Hospital with injuries to her back and hand, the NYPD said.
