A desolate stretch of parking lots along Delancey Street, under the shadow of the Williamsburg Bridge on the Lower East Side, will finally get a facelift after years of squabbling over what to do with the site.
Community Board 3 voted Monday night to develop five parcels of land known as the Seward Park Urban Renewal area into housing, shops and restaurants.
The area -- which was once topped by tenament buildings -- was razed about 40 years ago in the name of urban renewal. But the area has since sat untended as residents and community leaders squabbled over what to do with the area. Some advocated more affordable housing while others wanted retail, market residential and other projects.
The guidelines for development call for around 1,000 rental units with 50% reserved for low- and middle-income tenants and senior citizens) and mid-evel retail.
