Flight Out of Gulf Coast Encounters Bird Strike

One of the few flights out of the Gulf Coast Thursday evening was halted for hours when it encountered a bird strike.

U.S. Airways Flight 2562 from Gulfport, Miss. to Charlotte, N.C. was one of the first to leave the Gulf Coast since Isaac hit the area. But just before the plane lifted off, the pilot hit the brakes, aborting the takeoff.

NBC 4 New York's Tom Llamas, who was on the Gulf Coast to cover Isaac, was on that flight and said it felt like the pilot "just slammed on the brakes and the plane just stopped."

The pilot announced birds had hit both engines of the plane.

No one was hurt, but the flight was delayed several hours. The plane touched down in Charlotte at about 9:45 p.m. It was supposed to land at 6:50 p.m.
