At least five sharks have been spotted this summer in the waters around Long Island.
Shark sightings were reported near Montauk and Fire Island, where experts say an increase in the number of sharks is likely caused by the warmer than usual waters.
Long Island's beaches are not the only area coastline where sharks have been seen. Last Wednesday a fisherman in a kayak caught and then released a 6-foot sand tiger shark in Ocean City, N.J.
"There's a lot of bait in the water bringing the sharks in," said Harvey L. Bennett, owner of The Tackle Shop in Amagansett. "Sharks feed on seals and we have a lot of seals around here now."
Beachgoers and fishermen in the area are also seeing a surge in exotic marine life, like porpoises, which typically stay miles off shore.
One angler recently caught a monster 800-pound marlin off Montauk. Typically marlin don't swim north of Florida.
