NJ Cop Shoots, Kills Dog That Charged at Him: Police

Authorities say a northern New Jersey police officer shot and killed a dog that charged at him.

Union police say the shooting occurred Tuesday in the area of Shetland Drive. They say the pit bull-mix dog had gotten loose and chased after a resident and an animal control officer, who called police.

The dog's owner was not home and other family members tried unsuccessfully to catch the animal.

But authorities say the dog eventually charged at one of the three officers who had responded to the call, and that officer shot the dog once in the head.

No people were injured in the incident.

Authorities told NJ.com that the dog's owner had previously received "multiple summonses" stemming from instances where the dog got loose.
