Transgender Woman Found Badly Hurt on Manhattan Sidewalk Dies 10 Days After Apparent Attack: Sources

What to Know

  • The 59-year-old woman was found with severe head injuries on a Manhattan sidewalk late last month
  • She died at a hospital Thursday, 10 days after she was found gravely hurt on Seventh Avenue
  • Sources say the victim is transgender, and they believe her injuries were sustained in an attack, not some kind of fall

A transgender woman found badly hurt, apparently severely beaten, on a Manhattan sidewalk late last month has died of her injuries, law enforcement sources close to the investigation tell NBC 4 New York.

The 59-year-old woman was found with head trauma outside a Five Guys on Seventh Avenue around 10:30 p.m. April 25. She was unconscious when she was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center, where she died 10 days later, on Thursday.

It wasn't clear if the woman had regained consciousness at any point before she died.

Law enforcement sources say it appears her injuries were not from a fall, nor did they seem to be self-inflicted; the sources say police are looking into her death as a homicide. No suspects have been identified, and authorities are asking anyone with information about what happened that night to call police.

The medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine her cause of death.
