The tri-state was largely spared from the string of intense thunderstorms that battered parts of upstate New York Tuesday, knocking down trees, power lines and several buildings.
Nearly all of New Jersey and parts of New York were warned to brace for potentially dangerous weather, but the worst of the storm passed over the region. There were isolated reports of trees and wires down in parts of Monmouth County, and winds were thought to have caused a scaffolding to collapse on the Upper West Side.
In upstate New York, thousands were without power after rain and strong winds swept through. Officials were investigating whether a tornado touched down in Madison County, where four people were killed and four homes were destroyed.
The system wasn't expected to bring much relief from muggy conditions on Wednesday, when it could again be very humid with highs in the low 90s. Another bout of evening storms are possible.
