A Bronx teenager who allegedly fired a gun at a group of men standing outside a housing project Monday afternoon and was bashed in a head several times with a rock when they chased him into the complex has died, police said.
Authorities responding to a 911 call reporting an assault at the Edenwald Houses, the city's largest public housing complex in the Bronx, around 3 p.m. found 17-year-old Antonio Lyles with severe head trauma.
Lyles was taken to the hospital in critical condition, and later arrested on assault and criminal possession of a weapon charges after detectives learned he allegedly opened fire on the group, prompting the attack on him.
He died shortly after 4:15 a.m. Tuesday, slightly more than 12 hours after he was assaulted with the rock. The medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine if died of injuries related to the attack.
Police arrested two Bronx men, ages 18 and 20, on gang assault and assault charges in connection with Lyles' beating.
