A Bronx teenager who allegedly fired a gun at a group of men standing outside a housing project Monday afternoon and was bashed in a head several times with a rock when they chased him into the complex has died, police said.
Authorities responding to a 911 call reporting an assault at the Edenwald Houses, the city's largest public housing complex in the Bronx, around 3 p.m. found 17-year-old Antonio Lyles with severe head trauma.
Lyles was taken to the hospital in critical condition, and later arrested on assault and criminal possession of a weapon charges after detectives learned he allegedly opened fire on the group, prompting the attack on him.
He died shortly after 4:15 a.m. Tuesday, slightly more than 12 hours after he was assaulted with the rock. The medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine if died of injuries related to the attack.
