Teen Runaway Steps Off Bus in NYC with Loaded Handgun, Police Say

A teen runaway from Virginia carrying a loaded handgun stepped off a bus at New York City's bus terminal and was immediately picked up by police, authorities said Saturday.

The 13-year-old boy, whose name wasn't disclosed by police, was carrying a bag with a loaded Glock 40 caliber handgun and 79 rounds of ammunition when he arrived Friday afternoon at the New York Port Authority Bus Terminal, investigators said.

He told officers he was carrying the weapon for protection.

Officers had received information that the teen was traveling to New York from Max Meadows, Virginia, Port Authority Police spokesman Joe Pentangelo said.

The boy was arrested without incident on a weapons possession charge. He was being held in a juvenile detention center in New York.

The boy's family has been notified, Pentangelo said.
