Cuomo: US Funding Bill Boosts TZ Bridge Project

The bill awaits President Barack Obama's signature

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the project to replace New York's Tappan Zee Bridge could get a "huge boost" from a $105 billion transportation bill just passed by Congress.

The bill awaits President Barack Obama's signature.

The state hopes to start construction by the end of the year on the $5 billion Hudson River crossing between Rockland and Westchester counties.

On Friday, Congress approved a 2-year bill that bolsters funding to the Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act. The state hopes to use the loan program to help finance the $5 billion bridge.

However, according to the Journal News, the state has said the new Tappan Zee Bridge will be built whether or not it secures the loan. It expects to fund the project primarily through tolls and bonds.
