Suspicious Truck Causes Brief Evacuation of Times Square Section

Police evacuated a section of Times Square Saturday night after counter-terrorism officers spotted a suspicious rental truck with Georgia license plates parked at a bus stop with the keys in the ignition.

Officers called a bomb squad to the location at about 7:50 p.m. after spotting wires extending out of the dashboard toward the rear of the truck, police said. They also noticed gas canisters behind the driver's seat.

Police evacuated the area while bomb squad officers examined the vehicle. The officers determined that the canisters and the truck were empty.

The driver was located a short time later and was questioned, but hasn't been charged with any crime.

Police reopened the area at about 8:30 p.m.
