Cop Shoots Fleeing Drug Suspect on Long Island: Officials

The suspect was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries

Police on Long Island say an officer shot and wounded a drug suspect trying to flee a traffic stop Monday night.

Nassau County Police say the suspect struck an officer and tried to flee when he was stopped in the north shore community of Locust Valley around 10 p.m.

According to Inspector Kenneth Lack, the suspect allegedly tried to back up in the direction of the injured officer. At that point, the officer, "in fear of his life," fired three shots at the suspect, Lack said.

The suspect was hit once and taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Lack said he had prior drug-related convictions.

The officer was taken to the hospital with a knee injury.
