Supporters Rally for 200,000 Pupils in NYC Charters by 2020

Thousands of charter school supporters have rallied to demand that New York City double the number of students attending privately run, publicly funded charter schools by 2020.

Rally organizers from the group Families for Excellent Schools say 25,000 people attended the rally Wednesday in Brooklyn's Prospect Park.

The number of New York City students attending charter schools topped 100,000 for the first time this school year. Families for Excellent Schools wants to see the total climb to 200,000 by 2020.

The rally featured a performance by rapper Common and a keynote speech by Rep. Hakeem Jeffries.

Jeffries has been mentioned as a possible challenger to Mayor Bill de Blasio in the Democratic mayoral primary next year.

De Blasio is perceived as an opponent of charter school expansion.
