Student Killed in Wrong-Way Crash; 7 Injured

A Connecticut College student headed to a medical mission in Africa for spring break was killed when a wrong-way driver collided with the van she was riding in.

School spokeswoman Deborah MacDonnell said junior Elizabeth Durante of West Islip, N.Y., was killed Saturday on her way to the airport.

State police said the accident happened at about 3:45 a.m. on I-395 near Montville.

The seven other students in the van were treated at local hospitals. McDonnell said none of the injuries are believed to be life- threatening.

The group was heading to Kaberamaido, Uganda as part of a medical mission with Asayo's Wish Foundation. The students were going to deliver medical supplies and help provide basic medical care to the village's residents. Durante and another student organized the trip.

State police arrested Daniel Musser, 22, of Groton on charges including manslaughter and drunken driving.

“Elizabeth was a student of enormous talent, commitment and compassion. Her passing is an incalculable loss to our community," Connecticut College President Leo Higdon Jr., said in a statement. "Our deepest sympathies are with Elizabeth's family and with her many friends on campus.”

Connecticut College is a private school of about 1,900 students in New London.
