Stroke Hampered Woman Killed in Bronx Apartment Fire: Authorities

A woman killed Friday in a fire at a Bronx apartment building had difficulty escaping because a stroke had restricted her movement, officials said.

Fire officials on Saturday identified the woman as 67-year-old Delores Townsend. She had been taken from the bedroom of her sixth-floor apartment at 694 E. 149th St. in Morrisania with severe burns to her body, police said.

She later died at the hospital, according to police.

Nearly 80 firefighters responded to the fire at the 20-story public housing project.

That unit sustained the most damage in the fire; other homes had a little water damage.
