Staten Island Driver Charged in Death of Pedestrian: NYPD

A Staten Island woman has been charged in an accident that killed a 73-year-old pedestrian, police say.

Police said Deborah Pecoraro, 54, was driving a Nissan westbound on Wiman Avenue when she made a left turn onto Hylan Boulevard Tuesday morning.

She struck the 73-year-old Mary Cerqua, also of Staten Island, who was crossing Hylan Boulevard, police said.

EMS responded and transported Cerqua to Staten Island University North Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Pecoraro, who stayed on the scene, was charged with failure to yield to pedestrian, resulting in injury, and failure to exercise due care.
