A wintry storm dumped snow and freezing rain across the tri-state Sunday into Monday, making travel treacherous and causing dozens of crashes, including one that was deadly and two others involving 20 cars each, and forecasters say another system may bring more snow Tuesday.
Two people were killed in a crash in New Jersey's Hunterdon County when a car slid off Interstate 78, law enforcement sources said.
Icy roads also caused a 24-car pileup late Sunday that closed the Bronx River Parkway in both directions for much of the night, Westchester County police say. Multiple people reported minor injuries.
A 20-car crash early Monday also closed southbound lanes of Interstate 95 for about two hours, police say. Six people were injured.
And in the Jersey Shore town of Toms River, at least 50 wrecks were caused by weather conditions as the storm dumped 8 inches of snow Sunday, authorities say. No one was seriously injured.
Most of the tri-state saw accumulations of 1 to 3 inches of slushy snow with a slick coating of freezing rain on top, especially north and west of New York City. Temperatures hovered in the low 30s, but the wind chill made it feel like it was 20 degrees outside.
Local airports reported flight delays of around an hour early Sunday evening, but all were operating without significant delays by later in the night.
Warmer air moved in overnight along with a gradual changeover to rain.
Forecasters say occasional light freezing rain and drizzle will fall over the tri-state through Monday afternoon, mostly north and west of Route 287, creating slippery spots on untreated roads and walkways. Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing across the region, though, so any remaining black ice will likely melt by Monday evening.
Another fast-moving storm is expected to arrive Tuesday, spreading light snow across the tri-state area from late morning through the afternoon. Minor accumulation is possible with this system, particularly on grassy areas and colder surfaces.
Several inches of snow may accumulate in areas southwest of the city, with lesser accumulation likely north and west.
A blast of arctic air will move in Wednesday and keep temperatures at or below freezing through Friday.
