A fire in a top-floor shaft of a five-story building in midtown Manhattan generated heavy smoke Saturday in the Penn Station area.
The fire started at about 4:40 p.m. at a building at 316 West 36th Street and was extinguished soon after firefighters arrived, officials said.
No one was injured, fire officials said.
