Sharp Increase Seen in Subway Cell Phone Thefts

Better put away your sidekick while riding the subways.

Thieves targeting high end cell phones, especially the popular T-Mobile Sidekick, have caused a spike in subway robberies, according to police.

According to new NYPD data, there were 111 robberies in December, a 59 percent increase over December of 2007.

Officials are battling the uptick by assigning police officers on trains with bullhorns giving safety lectures.

The Sidekick, popular with celebrities like Snoop Dog and Paris Hilton, retails for about $300.
