Temps climbed above 90 today in some parts of our area, putting the Tri-State in the midst of an official heat wave as severe storms approached the area Monday night.
High heat and humidity set the stage for strong to severe thunderstorms to move into the region shortly before midnight.
Tri-state residents may see damaging winds, large hail, frequent lightning and heavy downpours. There is also a very slight chance for an isolated tornado. Western New Jersey could see the worst of it but the thunderstorms could also hit New York City.
Temperatures have climbed above 90 degrees in many spots today with high humidity, making it feel quite uncomfortable.
An air quality alert is in effect for most of the region as well with unhealthy levels of ozone present.
The potential for a significant heat wave exists for the end of the work week, with temperatures well into the 90s, even approaching 100 degrees in some spots.
The mercury should hit the mid 90s on Thursday and Friday temperatures could soar into the upper 90s to around 100 degrees.
The heat is expected to last into the weekend.
