Rutgers University students might find a boardwalk along the Raritan River one day under a new master plan that was presented to the school's board of governors on Tuesday.
Plans call for a new dining hall and student center. Brower Commons and the Rutgers Student Center would be demolished to create a new heart of the campus.
A foot bridge would link the New Brunswick and Piscataway campuses.
New Jersey's largest university hopes to use public-private partnerships to help fund the proposals, University President Robert Barchi told NJ.com.
"I think if you can't generate a plan that is strategic and tactical that can be implemented, you haven't done anybody a service," he said. "It's one thing to create a vision. I'm all for a vision, but that's not what this is. This is a plan. It's something we intend to accomplish."
Barchi declined to speculate on the cost of the master plan but said the university was trying to determine what each phase would cost.
The plans also call for creating a high-tech research park on the Livingston and Busch campuses near the Rutgers Athletic Center and building a faculty housing village on Cook campus in New Brunswick.
