Downed Telephone Pole Causes Fiery Explosion at Rutgers Campus

A downed telephone pole caused a fiery explosion at a Rutgers University campus Thursday that was caught on camera.

New Brunswick police said a truck struck the pole about 10:30 a.m. at the Cook campus in New Brunswick, New Jersey, causing it to collapse.

The transformer that sat on top of the pole then exploded on the ground.

Video shows the transformer on the ground near a body of water, periodically sparking and then erupting into small explosions.

Emergency services were at the scene when the video was shot. Energy company PSEG said the crash caused 180 of its customers to lose power for more than an hour.

Information on the condition of the driver and the cause of the crash was not immediately available.
