Fake Medical Worker Pretends to Be Shopping for Birthday After Long Shift, Flees Mall With $37,500 Rolex: Police

A man disguised as a doctor or lab worker who said he was shopping for his birthday after a 16-hour shift asked to look at a $37,500 Rolex at a New Jersey mall jewelry store, then ran off with the high-end watch, authorities say.

Police say the man walked into Michael Anthony Jewelers in the Willowbrook Mall around 1:45 p.m. Monday and inquired about a Rolex Presidential Watch. A store worker went to get it for him and displayed the watch, at which point the man grabbed it and ran out of the mall, cops say.

He may have driven off in a Ford Fusion-style vehicle with Florida license plates that cops say was waiting in the parking lot outside. Authorities say the man had an identification tag hanging from his neck that read, "Mount Vernon."

Police released surveillance images of the suspect. Anyone with information about him is asked to call the Wayne Police Detective Bureau at 973-633-3530.
