Reuters' New York Office Evacuated in Possible Anthrax Scare

Puff of white powder clears 140 from Times Square newsroom

The 19th-floor offices of the Reuters news organization were evacuated earlier today after managing editor Brian Rhoads opened an envelope and discovered a white powder.

As a precaution, however, personnel were cleared out of Reuters offices in the a building between 42nd and 43rd Street.

Just last week, the lobby of The New York Times building was evacuated for several hours after a secretary opened an envelope that also contained a white granular powder that law enforcement later determined was harmless.

Reuters employees left their 7th Ave. offices in midtown Manhattan and assembled in Bryant Park. News people were reportedly using the Wi-Fi at a nearby cafe to continue working.
