Fire Erupts at New Jersey Hotel

A blaze at a hotel in Elmwood Park, N.J., Wednesday afternoon forced one person to jump out of a window but resulted in no serious injuries, according to the man's account and authorities.

Sean Johnson said he jumped from a third-story window at the Red Carpet Inn when the smoke became unbearable.

The fire at the hotel on Route 46 started after 1 p.m. and was knocked down by 3 p.m., according to local authorities.

First responders were going from room to room to make sure all hotel patrons and staff were accounted for. The fire is believed to have started with a mattress on the first floor.
