Queens High School Student Arrested in Shooting That Injured Sudan Diplomat's Wife: Police

Mawahib Elbahi was hit by a stray bullet as she walked with her two children in Queens last week

A Queens high school student has been arrested in connection with a shooting that wounded a Sudanese diplomat's wife last week, police said.

The diplomat's wife, 31-year-old Mawahib Elbahi, was hit by a stray bullet as she walked with her two children in Queens Tuesday. The bullet struck her between the neck and shoulder. She is expected to recover.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly had said that two brawling groups of young men started shooting and she was an innocent bystander.

The 19-year-old suspect is a student at Long Island City High School. He was charged with attempted murder, police said.

It wasn't known if he had an attorney.
