Queens Parole Officer Kills Parolee at Station

Shooting happened in the waiting room

Authorities say a parolee was shot and killed inside a New York state parole office after he refused to drop a knife.
    
New York City police say the shooting happened at about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the waiting room of a parole office in Queens.
    
Police say the parolee objected to a search of his backpack and wielded a knife. They say After he ignored an order to drop the weapon, a parole officer shot him once in the head.
    
The state Division of Parole issued a statement claiming a parole officer had been taken hostage before the shooting. A spokeswoman declined to give the name of the parolee and the shooter.
