Queens Doctor Tried for Manslaughter After Botched Abortion

A doctor who presided over a surgical abortion that went wrong and caused a patient to bleed to death is on trial on manslaughter charges in New York City.

A jury in Queens heard closing arguments Tuesday in the case of Dr. Robert Rho.

Prosecutors say Rho botched the operation, bungled a second procedure intended to stop internal bleeding, then sent the patient home despite signs she was in grave condition.

The patient, Jaime Morales, died hours later. She was 30.

Defense attorney Jeffrey Lichtman says that while her death was a tragedy, it was not a crime.

He told the jury Morales was conscious and speaking when she left the clinic.

Rho could get prison time if convicted.

Jury deliberations are expected to start Wednesday.
