Prospect Park Zoo Welcomes Zebu Calf

Prospect Park’s zoo is welcoming a miniature zebu calf that was born last month.

The baby zebu, born on July 21, is currently nursing, but will be moved to a hay diet.

The zebu is one of the oldest breeds of cattle, believed to have originated in southern India around 6,000 years ago. Adult mini zebus can weigh up to 500 pounds and measure up to four feet in length. They reach maturity after two to three years.

Both male and female zebus have small horns on their heads. They can be black, reddish, gray or white. The three zebus at Prospect Park are light gray with white underneath.

The park’s zebu family lives alongside other domestic animals in the barn area, including sheep, goats, turkeys and miniature horses.
