In addition to being ranked the best small city in America, Princeton, NJ, was also ranked number one in the “Economic Health” metric. This metric took into account population growth, income growth, unemployment rate, share of population living below the poverty line and debt per median household.

Westfield, NJ, was ranked among the top 20 in both the overall rankings and safety rankings. This metric reported low levels of violent crime and property crime in the town. Westfield was also ranked among the top cities for “Economic Health.”

In addition to being named among the top best small cities, Fair Lawn, NJ, ranked among the top 50 in the “Education & Health” metric. This aspect of the analysis took into consideration a city’s school system, percent of insured population, share of adults in poor of fair health, as well as share of population with a high school diploma.

The city of Westport, Connecticut, ranked 27th out of 1,268 in the “Safety Metric.” The town also ranked 58th in “Education & Health.” This metric took into account the Connecticut town's rank as the 8th best public school system in the country.
