Premature Baby Dropped off at Long Island Fire Station: Police

A 3-pound, 13-ounce newborn was left at a fire station on Long Island on Thanksgiving, authorities said.

The baby girl was dropped off at the Wantagh Fire Department headquarters in the Nassau County town at about 11:45 a.m., according to police.

She has been named Baby Hope and is playful and healthy, officials said.

Authorities said that a representative of the mother called the Children of Hope Safe Haven Foundation to have the infant delivered to the fire house.

Because the mother followed the regulations set forth by the state's safe haven laws, she won't face any charges.

The baby girl appears to have been born one to three weeks premature and is being monitored at an area hospital, where she'll remain until she weighs more than 4 pounds.

The baby appears to be the 15th unwanted newborn saved in New York this year, according to the Children of Hope.

It comes a year and a day after a mother left her newborn in a nativity scene at a Queens church with his umbilical cord still attached.

Authorities at the time that the mother followed the spirit of the law even though she didn't alert anyone that she had left the baby at the church.
