A 10-year-old girl was killed when a minivan hit her and her pregnant mother as they crossed a street in Brooklyn Tuesday night, a police official said.
The 33-year-old woman and the girl were crossing 60th Street near 18th Avenue in Borough Park at about 9 p.m. when they were hit by a Honda Odyssey minivan, the official said.
A Hatzolah ambulance transported the victims to area hospitals, according to the NYPD. The girl, identified as Blima Friedman, died shortly thereafter.
The mother, who was in stable condition, gave birth to her baby at the hospital, according to the official. The baby appeared to be in stable condition.
It's not clear how far along in her pregnancy the mother was.
"It was a wonderful family," said family friend Yosi Nagel. "Just no words to express what happened."
The 22-year-old driver, Bilal Ghumann, stayed on the scene and was later charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle.
He was also arrested on an active warrant, authorities said.

Ghumann said at a court appearance Wednesday that he was a valet driver who borrowed the car without permission to run an errand and said it was an accident.
