Knife-Wielding Man Shot, Killed by Cops in Brooklyn Apartment: Police

Officers shot and killed a knife-wielding suspect in a domestic dispute at a Brooklyn home, police said.

Officers were first called to the Sheepshead Bay home on East 26th Street at about 11 a.m. Friday, after a mother and son were involved in an altercation there, police said. The son ran away, and a report was filed, police said.

The son, 28-year-old Denis Volchkin, returned that night, and when police went back to the apartment they found him with several knives, according to the NYPD.

Volchkin advanced on the officers as they backed away and ordered him to drop the weapons, according to police. Police say Volchkin lunged at the officers, and one of the officers opened fire, shooting him in the chest.

Volchkin was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"This is a quiet neighborhood, usually nothing happens here," said a neighbor who gave his first name as Eugene. "This is actually very weird."

Earlier in the week, police accidentally shot and killed a man they were trying to save during a dispute in a Midwood home. Rafael Laureano was allegedly being stabbed by another man, and when police opened fire on the suspect, Laureano was hit by one of their bullets, police said.

The suspect also died in that shooting.
