Gunman Shoots 2 Women Inside New Jersey House, Flees on Garden State Parkway Before Capture: Police

What to Know

  • A suspected carjacker who sparked a police chase on the Garden State Parkway Tuesday morning may be the same man who shot 2 people
  • It's not clear what sparked the pursuit, but there were reports of a possibly armed man fleeing in a 2004 gray Honda Accord
  • Earlier, police were called to a home on West Palisade Avenue for a report of two people shot; police say there may be a connection

A suspected carjacker who sparked a police chase on the Garden State Parkway Tuesday morning is also suspected of shooting two women in an Englewood home, police say.

Odari Green, 37, of Hackensack, was taken into custody after the shooting and carjacking, police said.

Earlier, police were called to a home on West Palisade Avenue for a report of two people shot. Englewood Police Chief Lawrence Suffern initially told reporters a man and a woman inside were transported to a local hospital in serious condition, but authorities said later the victims were two women.

Neighbors say a mother and son live in the home but don't believe either of them was injured.

State police said Green then carjacked someone on Park Avenue in Hackensack and fled to the Garden State Parkway, where he led police on a chase to Central and Watson avenues in East Orange, where he was arrested as he held on to a long gun.

Witness Chris Leo described police using a stun gun on Green.

"He fell down and he dropped the gun, police grabbed the gun," he said. "I don't know what happened but he was right in the middle of the street, and the gun about this long, it was a machine gun."

Friends said the victims and suspect knew each other. Authorities are still trying to determine a motive in the shooting but "we believe it's an isolated incident specifically related to the individuals in the house," said Suffern.
