Plant That Made Flawed FDNY Gloves Shuts Down

A troubled company that sold New York City's fire department thousands of flawed gloves says it is closing its Arkansas factory.

The Glove Corporation has been under fire for manufacturing gloves that failed to protect firefighters from burns.

The FDNY bought $800,000 worth of fire-retardant gloves from the company. The city asked for replacements after several firefighters suffered hand burns.

A subsequent investigation revealed that some material in the gloves was different from the versions that had undergone safety testing.

The New York Times reports that the company sent a letter to workers at its manufacturing plant in Heber Springs, Ark. this week saying the company couldn't afford to rectify the defects, and would shut down instead.

Phone calls to the company's headquarters in Alexandria, Ind., rang unanswered.
