Car Jumps Curb, Hits and Kills Water Peddler in Queens

The victim peddled water on the street, according to neighbors

An elderly driver lost control at the wheel and jumped the curb, striking and killing a water vendor in Queens Monday afternoon, authorities say.

The car crashed onto the sidewalk at 28th Avenue and the Whitestone Expressway service road in College Point, Queens.

The victim, identified by relatives as 42-year-old Michael Munoz, was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver and a passenger in the car had minor injuries and were also taken to the hospital, police said.

Ysnoc Bauduy, who was driving nearby at the time of the crash, said he saw Munoz on the ground bleeding from the nose and mouth. He jumped out and performed CPR on Munoz until paramedics arrived.

"I saw him on the ground, I don't know how he's hurt, I don't know what happened," he said.

Neighbors said Munoz peddled water bottles to cars stopped at the traffic light at 28th Avenue on the service road.

"He had a good heart, he was just trying to make a living one day at a time," said David Bell.

Ralph Munoz, the victim's brother, told NBC 4 New York their mother died in a car crash in 2008.

"You feel like you're getting kicked twice," said Ralph Munoz.

No charges are expected against the driver.
