A 72-year-old bicyclist has died after being being struck by a truck in midtown Manhattan early Monday morning, police say.

According to the NYPD, the man was found unconscious on a lane around 5:53 a.m. at 8th Avenue and 45th Street. He was found next to a bike.

Police believe he was struck by a truck but the truck driver did not stop. 

The victim, identified as Joseph Chiam of the East Village, was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, NYPD says.

Images from the scene showed a mangled bicycle among a heavy police presence as an investigators tried to piece together what took place. 

NBC 4 New York spoke with a witness who called 911.

"He couldn't move, he was helpless," Jaquone Hopkins-Miller said. "Nobody else -- they just standing with their iPhones but nobody is trying to call to help him out. And all those minutes that went by, if EMT — because they came very fast — if they would have called, they probably could have saved his life."

The investigation is ongoing.
