More than 100 firefighters in New Jersey spent the night battling a five-alarm warehouse blaze that burned so intensely at points flames could be seen nearly a mile away, officials say.
Fire broke out on the third floor of the the building on George Street in Paterson about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday and quickly spread, firefighters say.
Crews worked overnight to control the blaze, which caused the building's roof to collapse and blew out windows. At times Wednesday night, flames could be seen from state Route 80 and Totowa.
Crews were fighting hot spots Thursday morning amid heavy smoke.
The building houses several commercial businesses and some workers were inside when the flames broke out, officials say. Everyone escaped the building safely, and no other injuries have been reported.
Crews are expected to be battling the flames for several more hours, firefighters say. A large perimeter has been set up around the building because of ice forming on the ground from water used to fight the fire.
It’s not yet clear what sparked the blaze.
