A three-alarm fire engulfed one building in Paterson, N.J., and damaged another, forcing 13 people out of their beds and into the street in the middle of the night, authorities said.
The fire erupted at a multi-family home on Rosa Parks Boulevard at about 3 a.m.; firefighters trained their hoses on intense flames leaping from the roof as bystanders watched from the sidewalk. A vacant house next door also suffered damage.
Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Hancock tells The Record newspaper firefighters prevented the flames from damaging a third house and it took nearly three hours to bring the fire under control.
No one was injured. The Red Cross said it was assisting three families displaced by the fire.
The cause is under investigation.
