A Manhattan garage attendant parking an Audi plunged several floors down an elevator shaft in the car Thursday afternoon, landing upside down, authorities say.
The worker at Central Parking Garage at 306 E. 80th St. near Second Avenue was still inside the Audi Quattro when it went down the shaft, falling from the fifth floor and landing between the first and second floors, according to the FDNY.
The parking attendant was able to climb out of the car's moon roof on his own, and other workers helped him out of the shaft. He was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Firefighters worked to remove the car from the shaft Thursday evening, but did not give the OK to use the other elevator, which meant customers whose cars were parked on the upper floors were stuck.
Allison Barron hoped she would be able to get her car in the morning.
"I guess I'm going to have to wait and see if I can go to work tomorrow, because I use my car to work," she said.
It's not clear whether the accident was a result of a mechanical error or a human error, but Barron said she was not surprised to hear about a problem with the elevator.

"They've had problems for these elevators forever," she said. "There's somebody here fixing these elevators at least once a month."
