Police are investigating reports that someone threw a lit firecracker into a New York City subway car.

It happened on the F line between the 14th Street and 23rd Street stations at about 9:30 a.m. Friday.

A Fire Department spokesman said one person was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

In a press conference, the NYPD said the injured individual was a 52-year-old woman on the platform who sprained her left knee.

According to police, the incident occured on the last car of a subway train carrying a lot of people.

NYC Transit President Andy Byford told NBC 4 New York: "This is criminal, dangerous and abhorrent behavior, and we are working with the NYPD to ensure whoever did this is brought to justice."

Service on the line was briefly disrupted during the investigation, but normal service has since resumed.

Police believe the suspect got off the train at 23rd Street.

Images from the scene showed about a dozen officers combing the 23rd Street station looking for the suspect who ignited the firecracker.
